Listen.

A neighborhood in New Orleans did this. Shut down traffic for a day to throw the thing a block party.

The city said, “haha guys ok, bet you won’t do it again.”

The next year they had an even bigger birthday party for the pot hole. Disrupted even more traffic. Local bakery donated cake.

The city caved and fixed the road.

If you cannot get things fixed by following the rules, be as bombastic as you need to be.

So, there's apparently research coming out now about microplastics being found in people's bloodstreams and the possible negative effects of that and I feel the need to get out ahead of the wave of corporate sponsored "be sure to recycle your bottles!" or "ban glitter!" campaigns and remind everyone:

It's fishing nets. It's fishing nets. It is overwhelming fishing nets It always has been fishing nets. Unless regulations are changed, it will continue to be fishing nets.

The plastic in the ocean in largely discarded nets from industrial fishing. The microplastics are the result of these nets breaking down. The "trash islands" are also, you guessed it. Mostly fishing nets and other discarded fishing industry equipment.

Do not allow them to continue to twist the story. Do not come after disabled people who require single use plastics. Do not come after people using glitter in art projects and makeup. These things make up a negligible amount of the issue compared to corporate waste, specifically in the fishing industry. Do not let them shift the blame to the individual so they can continue to destroy the planet and our bodies without regulation.

Industries are incredibly resistant to taking responsibility for their own waste, to the point where “consumers are responsible for industrial waste” is somehow considered a sensible, ethical, worthy sentence.

It is actually perfectly reasonable to say that “industries are responsible for industrial waste” and “the effects of industry can, should and must be fixed by industry” and “Industry can, should and must be held responsible for its impacts on the commons, such as air, water, oceans and land.”

Really fun watching the real-time website culture shift from “Tumblr staff sucks and is incompetent and we hate them” -> Staff starts doing good things but everyone still reflexively hates and bullies them for everything they attempt because we’re all suspicious and hesitant to trust like wounded animals or divorcees who have been hurt before -> “Staff truly understands us finally someone who knows what we want bless thank you so much staff”

From what I’ve heard about the yahoo days, staff are unsung heroes and have fought multiple very terrible initiatives that would have probably killed the site. I can’t remember the details, but I think yahoo wanted to make tumblr require a yahoo account and staff basically dragged their feet on it as hard as they could until they were able to talk some sense into someone? Might have read a @sreegs post about it or something

Yeah it was about OneID.

I really can’t stress how much Tumblr/Staff’s appearance during the Yahoo/Verizon days has been misguided attempts at increasing DAUs (daily active users) at the behest of Tumblr’s owners while The Actual Staff, the fucking people actually doing the work, were screaming “PLEASE LET US JUST MAKE THE SITE BETTER”. I was on the iOS team. It took us years of negotiating and advocating to just set aside some time to literally bring down the crash rate and improve the app’s performance.

We had to twist the message of “the app takes more than 10 seconds to launch because it’s broken” into “more users will use the app if it launches faster 🙂” in order to achieve that. That was one of our greatest successes because it spread to Android and Web too (latency from the server). And it WORKED. We ended up with numbers to back it up. Crash rates plummeted as slowly but surely, the apps became faster and more performant. Plus the work we did specifically for that goal led to less crashes and better performance in other areas because it shed a light on spaghetti code that had needed fixing for years.

Sure it wasn’t something users noticed easily, because it was more easy to notice “the app is crashing all the time” vs “the app is not crashing”, but it was honest work that actually helped users. But that doesn’t lead to hockey stick revenue graphs so it wasn’t prioritized.

Automattic is finally on track with allowing the real Staff to implement the ideas they’ve had for years that Yahoo wouldn’t green-light (ad-free, tipping, blaze, Just Communicate More, etc). I hope they keep it up.

Truly grateful Morbius came out in 2022 because 10 years ago, “evil vampire Matt Smith” would’ve made this site unusable

schrodinger's chekhov's gun. a detail in a story that looks like it should have some big payoff but it's too early to tell if that's relevant or if the author just has a passion for lovingly describing guns.

schrodinger's chekov's occam's razor: you find an inconsistent or inaccurate detail in a work that would be brilliant if it was foreshadowing a plot twist later on, but it's too early to tell whether the author expects you to be smart, and the simplest explanation is that they fucked up

It’s interesting that Fallen London (/the Neath in general) has both “indeterminate gender, others have to awkwardly guess” characters and “openly non-binary, referred to as gender neutral” characters, including the option for the player to be one or the other! I’ve never seen a piece of media do both.

took us a little while to make this happen, and came directly from player feedback, but in hindsight of COURSE having both is cool and the best.

To Tired Writers. To the people out there whose hearts very, very much want to write and work on WIPs, but who are just mentally and physically exhausted right now. It’s okay. It is okay to rest sometimes. Allow yourself time to rest.

I’ve never seen another character capture my characters’ energies (specifically Minnie’s energy because she would):

I mean, this almost directly parallels a scene in Book Six:

This is what happens when disabled people write/play disabled characters!

Also, for those wondering, the movie is Run (Hulu). This is the first time I’ve laughed in this otherwise horrifying thriller. I am currently making this post as a breather before the movie gets even more intense.

Okay but March lasted for five years and now it’s suddenly June???

(softly but with feeling) what the fuck??

Mood

I wonder how many gay people are actually transgender & dont know it because people thing being transgender is transitioning when it’s literally just not being cis.

like I had a friend tell me last night “all my life I wanted to be a girl. even to this day, like if someone told me I could transition & look like you or *insert another trans woman idk* I would do it in a heartbeat” and when I was like omg ur transgender he was surprised? like he was like wait just wanting to be a girl makes me transgender even if I dont do anything about it? and like its harder to pinpoint non binary people but if u have a desire be a different gender ur transgender. transitioning is a choice but being transgender is not.

“One of the symptoms of being a girl is wanting to be a girl.” Don’t remember where I heard that but the quote is my life.

cowboyslovingboys

This is one of the posts I can explicitly pinpoint as helping me realize that I might not be cis. The biggest symptom of being trans is wanting to not be your gender. It can also be dysphoria, it can also be euphoria, it can also be presentation, but wanting to be something else is all you really need.

aceofsquiddles

Confirmed. How to know you’re agender: You don’t want to be anything else. You look at the options for gender and gender presentation and decide to go back to bed

aceofsquiddles

Bold of you to assume I got out of bed

Nah but seriously thanks for the insight

So, if I look at gender and say “this is some bullshit and I want no part of it”, I guess that makes me agender?

if that’s how you wanna identify, yeah.

feeling anything mentioned in this post doesn’t mean you have to identify as trans, but feeling anything in this post is literally all that’s necessary to identify as trans if you want to.

fuck gatekeepers forever.

👏if👏you👏don't👏feel👏cis👏you're👏possibly👏not👏cis👏

i mean this is literally what jvn said

This is one of those things where you can go 25+ years of your life not realising that actually no not everyone secretly wishes they were some mashup of male and female and that you are, in fact, genderfluid as fuck.

You can want to be the other gender.

You can want to be another gender.

You can want to divorce all connection to the gender you were born into.

You can want to keep it as an origin point that shapes your journey.

You can want to be more than one gender at once.

You can want to be more than one gender, at different times.

You can want to be no gender.

You can want to be sort of in between genders.

You can want to be both genders.

You can want to be rid of gendered body parts you already have.

You can want to keep gendered body parts while also being another gender.

You can want to be rid of them but not want the side effects of excising them.

You can feel dysphoria at being shaped like/viewed as/treated like a gender you don’t want.

You can feel euphoria at being shaped like/viewed as/treated like a gender you do want.

You can change your mind or adjust your goals or refine your wishes.

You can be stationary and fixed in your identity.

You can be fluid and changing.

You can be extremely gendered in your presentation.

You can be not very gendered in your presentation.

You can be androgynous.

You can be a little of both.

You can be a lot of both.

If gender is a line you can cross, as the words trans (across/on the other side of) and cis (here/on the same side of) indicate, you can cross it in any way you like, including dancing on top of it.

Be happy.

Be you.

This is an extremely affirming post.

Let’s talk about mynoise.net

Have you ever been listening to Rainymood and thought, “Yeah, this is good … but it would be nice if I could customize the sound more, or if there was a little more choice.

Let me introduce you to MyNoise.

MyNoise is a customizable sounscape looper with so many options, even within each soundscape.  So say, for instance, you really love rain sounds when you write or study or relax.  Anything.  I know I’m a big fan of rain sounds.  They have a page for that.

image

But say you like really high, pattery rain, and LOTS of low thunder.  Here’s where MyNoise really stands out: you can customize that.  See those sliders with all the cute colors?  That is your equalizer. You can adjust the levels based on what you want to hear more and less of.  Here’s how it looks when you want high, pattery rain and low, rumbly thunder:

image

But say rain isn’t really your jam.  Say you want something a little more ambient, a little more background noise-y.  Something with people.  Well, they have customizable coffee house chatter that even has the levels listed for things like “kitchen,” “babble,” and “table”:

image

Or say you miss the ocean.

image

Or say you miss your cat.

image

Or say you miss your spaceship.

image

Or say you miss the dungeon where you and your team of scalawag adventurers used to explore and face off against, say, dragons.  In the dungeon.

image

This site is seriously so helpful, and those are just a fraction of every kind of sounscape the site has to offer.  The best part is that if you want to layer it with music (for instance, I’ll layer a playlist + rain + coffee shop if the scene I’m writing takes place in a coffee shop), you can adjust the master volume, meaning all of your layers stay at their respective volumes, just louder or quieter.

Enjoy!

OH MY GOD
